Njeguši steak

Beef steak rolled up with Njeguši ham (from the village between Cetinje and Kotor) and cheese, breaded and fried. A speciality of the old royal capital.

  • Serves 4
  • 40 min

Ingredients

  • 4 thin beef steaks
  • 8 slices of cured ham
  • 4 slices of mature cheese
  • 100 g kajmak or cream cheese
  • Flour, 2 eggs and breadcrumbs
  • Oil, salt and pepper

How to make it at home

  1. Flatten the steaks, season and spread with kajmak.
  2. Lay the ham and cheese on top.
  3. Roll them up and secure with a cocktail stick.
  4. Coat them in flour, egg and breadcrumbs.
  5. Fry over a medium heat for about 10 minutes, until golden and cooked through.

The trick: Prosciutto or serrano ham makes a close substitute for smoked Njeguši ham.

Where and what to eat

To eat like a local: the konoba (tavern). The dishes you can’t miss are in the Montenegro guide.
