Yomari

Steamed rice-flour dumplings filled with molasses and sesame, shaped like figs, which the Newars of Patan and the valley make for the Yomari Punhi festival in December.

  • Serves 10
  • 1 h

Ingredients

  • 300 g rice flour
  • Hot water
  • 150 g jaggery or brown sugar
  • 50 g toasted sesame seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cardamom
  • A little ghee

How to make it at home

  1. Melt the jaggery gently with a spoonful of water and mix it with the sesame and cardamom. Leave to cool slightly.
  2. Knead the flour with hot water, adding it gradually, until you have a soft dough.
  3. Take a ball and shape it into a hollow cone with ghee-greased fingers.
  4. Fill with the molasses mixture and close the tip, shaping it into a long teardrop.
  5. Steam for about 15 minutes.

The trick: They’re eaten hot: the filling runs out.
