Meat pie

The individual meat pie with gravy, the food of rugby matches and Sydney’s street stalls. It’s eaten with your hands, with ketchup on top.

  • Serves 6
  • 2 h

Ingredients

  • 500 g minced beef
  • 1 onion
  • 2 tablespoons of flour
  • 400 ml beef stock
  • 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce and 1 of ketchup
  • Shortcrust pastry for the base and puff pastry for the lid
  • 1 egg
  • Ketchup to serve

How to make it at home

  1. Brown the meat with the chopped onion, add the flour and then the stock, Worcestershire sauce and ketchup.
  2. Simmer for 30 minutes until thick. Leave to cool.
  3. Line individual tins with the shortcrust pastry and fill them with the meat.
  4. Cover with puff pastry, seal the edges, cut a slit in the centre and brush with egg.
  5. Bake at 200 °C for about 25 minutes, until golden. Serve with ketchup.

The trick: Cold filling: if it’s hot, the pastry goes soft.
