Copenhagen highlights

The places you can’t miss. In the app we sort them by day and close to each other.

  1. Nyhavn

A canal of colourful houses and wooden boats; coffee here is pricey, but the photo is a must.

  2. Tivoli

An amusement park from 1843 right in the centre, with gardens and lights at night.

  3. Christiania

A self-governing neighbourhood in former barracks; no photos on “Pusher Street”.

  4. Louisiana

A modern art museum by the sea, 35 km away, with a sculpture garden facing the strait.

  5. Round Tower

You climb a spiral ramp, not stairs, to an open terrace above the rooftops of the old town.

  6. Church of Our Saviour

Four hundred steps to the golden spire; the last hundred and fifty wind round the outside, holding on to the rail.

  7. Rosenborg Castle

It keeps the Danish Crown Jewels in the basement. Out front, the King’s Garden fills up as soon as the sun comes out.

  8. Kastellet

A star-shaped fortress with a moat, a windmill and red barracks. You can walk along the ramparts.

  9. Christiansborg Tower

The city’s tallest tower, with a free lift and views of Slotsholmen, the harbour and the copper roofs.

  10. CopenHill

A waste-to-energy plant with a ski slope on the roof. Take the lift up for free and walk down the side path.

  11. Superkilen

A long park with street furniture brought from around the world: the red square, the Japanese octopus and the white wavy lines on the ground.

  12. Assistens Cemetery

A cemetery turned park where people picnic. Andersen and Kierkegaard are buried here, clearly signposted.

Kanelsnegl

The cinnamon swirl of Copenhagen’s bakeries: Danish dough rolled up with butter, sugar and cinnamon, iced on top. It’s eaten at any time of day with coffee.

  • Serves 12
  • 2 h 30 min

Ingredients

  • 500 g flour
  • 25 g fresh yeast
  • 250 ml warm milk
  • 1 egg
  • 50 g sugar
  • 75 g softened butter
  • Filling: 150 g softened butter, 150 g brown sugar, 2 tablespoons of cinnamon
  • Icing: icing sugar and water

How to make it at home

  1. Dissolve the yeast in the milk and knead with the flour, egg, sugar, butter and a pinch of salt. Leave to rest for 30 minutes.
  2. Beat the filling butter with the sugar and cinnamon until creamy.
  3. Roll the dough into a rectangle, spread with the filling and roll it up from the long side.
  4. Cut into 3 cm slices, place on the tray and leave to rise for 30 minutes.
  5. Bake at 200 °C for about 12 minutes and ice them while still warm.

The trick: Don’t overbake them: they should stay soft inside.
