Stockholm highlights

The places you can’t miss. In the app we sort them by day and close to each other.

  1. Gamla Stan

The old town on an island, with cobbled streets and Stortorget square and its colourful façades.

  2. Vasa Museum

A 17th-century warship that sank on its maiden voyage, preserved almost intact.

  3. ABBA Museum

An interactive museum of the band, with costumes, records and a stage to sing along with them.

  4. Skansen

The oldest open-air museum in the world, with traditional houses and Nordic animals.

  5. Stockholm City Hall

The Nobel banquet is held in the Blue Hall and the ball in the Golden Hall, with eighteen million mosaic tiles.

  6. Östermalms Saluhall

An 1888 food hall reopened in 2020: smoked fish, seafood and cheeses beneath iron and brick.

  7. Monteliusvägen

A 500-metre path along the edge of the Södermalm cliffs, with the old town opposite.

  8. Woodland Cemetery

A pine forest by Asplund and Lewerentz, a World Heritage Site: understated chapels, the hill of remembrance and Greta Garbo’s grave.

  9. Drottningholm Palace

A royal residence with a baroque garden, a Chinese pavilion and a 1766 theatre that still runs with its original stage machinery.

  10. Långholmen

An island with a converted old prison, small freshwater coves and trails with views of the Västerbron bridge.

Semla

The cardamom bun filled with almond paste and whipped cream eaten in Stockholm and all over Sweden before Lent. Some people have it in a bowl of hot milk.

  • Serves 10
  • 2 h 30 min

Ingredients

  • 500 g flour
  • 25 g fresh yeast
  • 250 ml warm milk
  • 75 g butter
  • 60 g sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cardamom
  • 200 g almond paste (marzipan)
  • 400 ml whipping cream
  • Icing sugar

How to make it at home

  1. Knead the flour with the yeast, milk, butter, sugar, egg and cardamom. Leave to rise for 40 minutes.
  2. Shape 10 round buns, leave to rise for 30 minutes, brush with egg and bake at 220 °C for about 10 minutes.
  3. Once cool, cut a triangular lid from each one and scoop out a little of the crumb.
  4. Mix the crumb with the almond paste and a little milk, and fill the buns.
  5. Top with whipped cream, put the lid on and dust with icing sugar.

The trick: On Shrove Tuesday (fettisdagen) Swedes eat millions of them.
