Miami highlights

The places you can’t miss. In the app we sort them by day and close to each other.

  1. Ocean Drive

Miami Beach’s art deco avenue: pastel hotels, neon at night and the beach across the road.

  2. Wynwood Walls

A former warehouse district turned into an open-air graffiti museum, with galleries and breweries all around.

  3. Vizcaya

An Italian Renaissance-style villa on the bay, with formal gardens; a surprise in the middle of Miami.

  4. Everglades (day trip)

A vast wetland with alligators and herons; the Anhinga Trail boardwalk is the easy way to see them up close.

Cuban sandwich

The sandwich of Miami’s Cubans (and Tampa’s): Cuban bread with roast pork, ham, Swiss cheese, gherkins and mustard, pressed on the griddle until crisp.

  • Serves 4
  • 20 min

Ingredients

  • 4 Cuban loaves or short white baguettes
  • 400 g sliced roast pork (lechón)
  • 200 g cooked ham
  • 8 slices of Swiss cheese (Emmental)
  • Sliced gherkins
  • Yellow mustard
  • Butter

How to make it at home

  1. Split the bread and spread it with mustard.
  2. Fill with the pork, ham, gherkins and cheese.
  3. Butter the outside of the bread.
  4. Cook in a frying pan over a medium heat with a weight on top (another pan or a press), about 3 minutes per side, until the cheese melts.
  5. Cut it diagonally and serve hot.

The trick: For the pork, a sour orange and garlic mojo: the flavour of Little Havana.
