Berlin highlights

The places you can’t miss. In the app we sort them by day and close to each other.

  1. Brandenburg Gate

The gate that symbolises reunification; the Holocaust Memorial is two minutes away.

  2. East Side Gallery

The longest surviving stretch of the Wall, painted by artists from all over the world.

  3. Museum Island

Five museums on an island in the Spree; the Neues Museum holds the bust of Nefertiti.

  4. Tempelhof

A former airport turned park: people stroll, skate and cycle along the runways.

  5. Berlin Wall Memorial

A sixty-metre stretch with the death strip intact and a tower from which you can see the line of the Wall.

  6. Topography of Terror

Over the Gestapo cellars, next to the longest surviving section of the outer wall. Free entry.

  7. Holocaust Memorial

2,711 concrete blocks on undulating ground: walk in among them and the street noise fades away. Below, the information centre.

  8. TV Tower

An observation deck 203 metres above a flat city. Go up with a booked time slot or you’ll be stuck in the queue.

  9. Tempelhofer Feld

A former airport turned park: people skate and cycle along the runways.

  10. Markthalle Neun

A restored 1891 market hall. On Thursday evenings it hosts Street Food Thursday and fills with locals.

  11. Charlottenburg Palace

A Prussian Baroque residence with a formal French garden behind. Fewer crowds than the centre, and walking in the grounds is free.

  12. Mauerpark

On Sundays there’s a flea market and karaoke in the amphitheatre. A graffiti-covered stretch of the Wall still stands.

  13. Teufelsberg

A ruined American listening station on a hill made of war rubble, now covered in graffiti.

Currywurst

Berlin’s street food since 1949: a grilled sausage cut into slices, smothered in curried tomato sauce and served with chips.

  • Serves 4
  • 30 min

Ingredients

  • 4 bratwurst-style pork sausages
  • 1 onion
  • 400 g crushed tomatoes
  • 3 tablespoons of ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons of curry powder (plus more for sprinkling)
  • 1 teaspoon of sweet paprika
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar and 1 of vinegar
  • Oil and salt
  • Chips or a bread roll

How to make it at home

  1. Fry the chopped onion in oil, add the curry powder and paprika and toast for a few seconds.
  2. Add the tomato, ketchup, sugar, vinegar and salt and simmer for 15 minutes.
  3. Blend the sauce until smooth.
  4. Grill the sausages until golden and cut them into slices.
  5. Cover them with the hot sauce, sprinkle with curry powder and serve with chips.

The trick: In Berlin you order it “mit Darm” (with skin) or “ohne Darm” (without).
