  • from November to March

Low season: lots of things closed

From November to March many hotels and restaurants close and the boats between villages hardly run.

What to do: Base yourself in Sorrento (open all year) and use the SITA bus or a car to get around the coast.

  • from December to February

    Winter

Cold and fog in the north (Milan, Verona, Bologna) and the coast in low season, with many hotels and boats out of service.

What to do: A good time for museums and cities with fewer people; for the coast and the islands, May to October is better.

  • July, August

    Heat and high season

In July and August it’s very hot in Rome, Florence and the south, and the art cities and the coast get packed.

What to do: Start your visits early, book tickets and keep the middle of the day for resting.

Limoncello

The lemon liqueur of the Amalfi Coast, made with the peel of its giant lemons. It’s served ice-cold, in a small glass, at the end of a meal.

  • Serves 10
  • 30 min

Ingredients

  • 8 unwaxed lemons (thick-skinned)
  • 500 ml 96% food-grade alcohol
  • 600 ml water
  • 450 g sugar

How to make it at home

  1. Wash the lemons and peel only the yellow part of the skin, with none of the (bitter) white pith.
  2. Put the peel in a glass jar with the alcohol, close it and leave it to macerate somewhere dark for one to two weeks.
  3. Boil the water with the sugar until it dissolves and leave the syrup to cool.
  4. Strain the alcohol, mix it with the cold syrup and bottle it.
  5. Keep it in the freezer: it doesn’t freeze and it’s served ice-cold.

The trick: The longer it rests in the bottle, the smoother it gets.

Where and what to eat
